The UP law student, who accused BJP leader Chinmayanand of rape, was arrested in an extortion case this morning by the Special Investigation Team and has been sent to 14-day judicial custody.
"The woman was arrested from her residence and taken to hospital for medical examination. We will later produce her before a magistrate and seek her custody," an official involved with the SIT reportedly told a news agency. The team had earlier charged the law student and two of her friends after questioning them regarding a video clip where they were seen discussing extortion.
Despite the other two people confessing to their involvement in the case filed against them, the law student allegedly denied the charges. "I do not know if the people who helped me escape from Chinmayanand were using me. I have nothing to do with the extortion case. I think all this drama is being done to dilute my charges of rape," she had stated.
The law student alleged that Chinmayanand, who runs several ashrams and institutions across the country, recorded a video of her taking a bath and used the same to blackmail her for sex. She added that she was often brought at gunpoint to the BJP leader's room to give him massages. The girl uploaded a video of the same on Facebook without naming Chinmayanand. She had then disappeared, after which the UP police tracked her down and produced her in the court, where the SIT was ordered to inquire into the matter.
"I have been saying from day 1, that the video uploaded by the woman on Facebook, it has connections to extortion against Chinmayanand... I just cannot understand why she has not been arrested yet. She will go to jail, of that I am sure," Chinayanand's lawyer had told reporters yesterday.
