In a sensational verdict, the Madras High Court made it clear that it is not a crime when an unmarried couple rents a room in a hotel and stay together. The judge S. Ramesh pointed out that when live-in relationships or not considered a crime then this should also not be taken as that. This came up during a case where Taluq office officials and local police in Coimbatore sealed the premises of a guest house where they found liquor bottles in one room and an unmarried boy and girl staying.
A petition was filed by the guest house management of My preferred Transformation and Hospitality Private Limited with head offices at Gurgaon in Haryana challenging the seal to the premises. The judge also ordered that when the government has allowed a stipulated amount of alcohol possession it is not a crime that it was consumed in the premises as well. The government officials to their defense put forth that neighborhood women complained of illegal sexual activity on the premises to which the judge said that they should have called in the people who run the guest house for inquiry and instead of sealing the hotel is an extreme step and is a violation against the business.
