Tamil cinema saw success with direct OTT releases during the pandemic, but the trend waned as theatrical releases regained dominance post-lockdown. Now, fresh reports suggest that two big films starring Kamal Haasan and Nayanthara might buck the trend by opting for direct OTT premieres.
First up is “Indian 3”, the highly anticipated third chapter of Kamal Haasan’s iconic ‘Indian’ series, directed by Shankar. Originally planned for a grand Pan-Indian theatrical release in 2025, rumours now hint at a potential direct release on Netflix. This shift is reportedly due to the poor performance of “Indian 2” at the box office, prompting the makers to reconsider their strategy.
Similarly, the upcoming sports drama “Test”, starring Nayanthara, Madhavan, and Siddharth, is also rumoured to be eyeing a direct OTT debut. Directed by newcomer Sashikanth and produced by Y Not Studios, “Test” has music by Shakthishree Gopalan. While these reports are unconfirmed, the news has already gone viral among fans.
