There may come a day when you will need to pay subscription fees to access or to use some features on Twitter. The micro-blogging site is reportedly thinking of coming up with a subscription model.
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey is considering the option after the company has started witnessing a “sharp decline in its core advertising business”, especially since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The social media company will most likely experiment with some trials later this year. “A really high bar for when we would ask consumers to pay for aspects of Twitter will be set,” the CEO has been quoted as saying.
Many are critical of the move. If subscription is made mandatory, crores of users, especially in developing countries like India, will simply out out of the network. People in low-income countries like ours don’t pay subscription fees to access most popular dailies online. Why would they cough up monies for Twitter?
