Tollywood Heroines making a splash in Kollywood

Top Telugu actresses like Rashmika Mandanna, Sreeleela, Krithi Shetty, and Pooja Hegde are making their mark in Kollywood, adding to their already impressive Tollywood careers. This shift has sparked a debate about the motivations behind their move.

Is it a lack of opportunities in Tollywood that is driving them to Tamil cinema? Ace producer Vishnu Induri, who has worked in both Tamil and Telugu industries, believes otherwise. “They have dates to spare and are expanding their brand equity,” he says, highlighting the strategic nature of their decision.

Rashmika, who has already acted alongside Vijay in “Varisu” and Karthi in “Sulthan,” is set to collaborate with Sivakarthikeyan in “Boss.” Pooja Hegde is returning to Kollywood with a Suriya film after her success in “Beast” with Vijay.

Induri believes that multilingualism is crucial for actresses to sustain their careers. “Telugu films have transcended regional boundaries, making Telugu actresses visible to audiences across India,” he explains. “This visibility has led to an influx of offers from both Kollywood and Bollywood.”

Furthermore, 20-year-old Krithi Shetty, who shot to fame in Tollywood with “Uppena,” is currently working on several Tamil projects with stars like Karthi, Jayam Ravi, and Pradeep Ranganathan. “She has already proved herself alongside Telugu stars like Naga Chaitanya and Ram Pothineni, and now she is extending her reach to Kollywood,” points out Induri. He credits her talent and screen presence for attracting opportunities in Tamil cinema.

However, producer Lagadapati Sridhar offers a different perspective, suggesting that the busy schedules of top Telugu actors may be limiting their availability in Tollywood. He believes that these actresses are seeking “greener pastures” to further their careers.

Sridhar also points out the diminishing significance of regional boundaries, with many Tamil films being released in Telugu. “Big Tamil films are dubbed in Telugu, ensuring they reach a wider audience,” he says. “This blending of industries has created a pan-India market where language barriers are no longer relevant.”

The growing presence of Telugu actresses in Kollywood reflects the changing landscape of the Indian film industry. Their strategic moves, driven by both opportunity and a desire for wider recognition, are shaping a more interconnected and exciting cinematic landscape. As these actresses conquer new territories, they are not only expanding their fan bases but also paving the way for a more unified film industry.
