Tech giants have to take steps against rape videos: Sunitha Krishnan

Sunitha Krishnan, the renowned social activist fighting sex trafficking in India, has said that tech giants like Facebook and WhatsApp have to take urgent and long-lasting steps to prevent the circulation of rape videos in India.

Speaking to a magazine, the recipient of Padma Shri says that thousands of rape videos are under circulation every day in India.   Krishnan has been waging a relentless fight in the Supreme Court to make the tech giants, including Google, take primary responsibility to stop the circulation of rape videos by the time it is too late.

“There has been a law in force in India since 2012 to make tech companies comply when, for example, child pornography is reported,” Krishnan says.  The activist, who runs a rehabilitation centre named Prajwala for sex-trafficking victims, says that tech giants in India have to follow the same standards as they do in the US for screening rape videos, etc.  “They usually make excuses by showing privacy, freedom of speech, etc,” she avers.

“The criminal justice system in India is leaky and there is no fear in the minds of perpetrators,” Krishnan opines.
