Surjith Wilson the two-year-old boy who fell into an 80 feet hole dug for a borewell was found dead by rescue team who battled eighty hours non stop in the mission. Eyewitnesses who saw the battered and decomposing body at 10pm on Monday were left shellshocked while it was rushed to the government hospital in Manapaarai. The last rites were completed this morning at the Fathimapuram cemetery amidst a flood of tears from his parents and the public. Surjith returned to mother earth having lived one of the most meaningful two years.
The rescue team most of whom continued for close to four days on the mission foregoing Diwali festivities are being lauded in spite of its failure to save the little one's life. However Surjith will forever remain a champion for bringing awareness about open borewells and hopefully has saved many a future child from this type of tragic end. The government should take drastic measures to enforce a law that will severely punish those who are negligent and parents should become wary of their surroundings before letting their children out.
