Vidya Rani Veerappan, known widely as the daughter of the infamous forest brigand Veerappan, is making a name for herself in the political arena, particularly as the Vice President of Tamil Nadu BJP's youth wing. Despite her lineage, Vidya remains undeterred by the attention, positive or negative, and focuses on her work and social service as her true testament.
Having completed her law degree in Bengaluru, Vidya has not only taken charge of a small school for children in Krishnagiri district but has also taken significant steps in her political career. Joining the BJP in 2020, she swiftly rose through the ranks to become the Vice President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) and now holds the position of Vice President of the BJP Backward Morcha in Tamil Nadu.
Vidya's father, Veerappan, was a notorious figure known for his involvement in smuggling activities and encounters with the police. Despite this legacy, Vidya's decision to join politics was fueled by a desire to alleviate the suffering she witnessed growing up, especially among those affected by the conflicts involving her father and the authorities.
Her entry into politics was not impulsive but a result of her longstanding commitment to social service. Regarding her recent appointment, Vidya expressed that it was a natural progression for her, considering her dedication to serving with a vibrant, young team.
Despite having met her father only once, Vidya recalls his words encouraging her to pursue medicine and serve the people, a conversation that continues to guide her choices today. She emphasizes that while her father's name may carry a certain stigma, she hopes to be judged by her actions and contributions rather than her lineage.
An interesting anecdote from her past reveals that she was named by a Special Task Force officer, who dubbed her 'Vidhya Rani,' suggesting that she would be the 'Queen of the land' following her father's legacy as the 'King of the forest.' This name, chosen by an officer who knew her father well, adds a unique twist to her story.
Looking ahead, Vidya aims to travel across Tamil Nadu, engaging with young people to dispel misconceptions about the BJP and encourage their involvement in the party. Her story is not just about breaking free from a notorious legacy but also about forging her path and making a meaningful impact in society, regardless of her past. She says she is inspired by PM Modi's vision for the country's development.
