Expanding its vision into the creative domain, SIMATS established the Saveetha Institute of Media and Communication Studies (SIMAC), a dedicated hub for media education and research. SIMAC offers specialized undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Visual Communication, Animation and Graphics, blending theoretical knowledge with practical industry exposure.

As part of this initiative, SIMAC proudly presents “Auteur – National Short Film Festival 2026,” a prestigious national-level platform designed to celebrate cinematic storytelling and emerging creative voices. Scheduled to take place in July 2026 at the SIMATS campus in Chennai, the festival aims to bring together aspiring filmmakers, students, and independent creators from across India.

Rules and Submission Guidelines

The festival is open to students and independent creators, with a maximum of five members per team (excluding actors). Participants are required to submit original short films with a duration of up to 15 minutes in MP4 format. Films may be in any language; however, English subtitles are mandatory for all submissions.

Strict content guidelines apply—any form of vulgarity or obscenity will lead to disqualification. Participants are encouraged to use original or royalty-free music, while copyrighted music is permitted only up to 15 seconds with proper authorization.

Submissions must follow the prescribed format, including proper file naming and valid identification proof. The deadline for submission is 30th May 2026.

Who Can Participate?

The festival welcomes a wide range of participants, including Visual Communication and media students, school students, independent filmmakers, and digital content creators. All genres are accepted, including fiction, animation, and experimental films, ensuring a diverse and inclusive cinematic experience.

Festival Structure

All submitted films will undergo evaluation by a distinguished selection committee comprising film directors, technicians, critics, and industry experts.

Round 1: Preliminary Screening

Films will be assessed based on originality, storytelling, technical execution, and social relevance. The best entries will advance to the final stage.

Final Round: 72-Hour Filmmaking Challenge

Shortlisted teams will participate in an intensive filmmaking challenge where a theme will be announced on-site. Participants must conceptualize, shoot, and complete a film within 72 hours, which will then be screened before a jury. This round is designed to test creativity, efficiency, and collaborative skills under real-time pressure.

Terms and Conditions

Participants are required to submit a signed copyright undertaking form along with their film. By participating, filmmakers grant the organization non-revocable rights to showcase and promote their films across various platforms, including social media and public screenings. Selected films may also be featured on official digital channels with the creators’ consent.
