Actor Siddharth who landed in controversy after posting a derogatory comment against Saina Nehwal appeared before the Central Crime Branch of the Chennai police through a video call and has tendered apologies to the people concerned.
For the unversed, Saina Nehwal on her official Twitter handle posted a statement saying that she condemns the attack made by Punjab farmers when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the state. Siddharth responded to the tweet with a derogatory comment.
The National Commission for Women requested Twitter to block the actor’s account as his statement was "lewd and misogynist and outrageous to the modesty of the women amounting to disrespect and insult on social media.”
Following the outrage on social media, the 'Boys' star released an open apology letter that read, “Dear Saina, I want to apologise to you for my rude joke that I wrote as a response to a tweet of yours, a few days ago. I may disagree with you on many things but even my disappointment or anger when I read your tweet, cannot justify my tone and words. I know I have more grace in me than that. As for the joke... If a joke needs to be explained, then it wasn't a very good joke to begin with. Sorry about a joke that didn't land."
Later a complaint was registered at the Hyderabad cyber crime police against Siddharth on January 12 under IT Act. It was re-routed to the Tamil Nadu cybercrime. Siddharth reportedly appeared before the police through video conferencing and told them that there was no hidden intention behind his comment and tendered an apology. "The actor cooperated with the investigation officers during the inquiries and the process was recorded for further evaluation," said an officer. If required, Siddharth will be summoned again for further inquiry
