Sharmila takes over the reigns of AP Congress

On Tuesday, the Congress party appointed Y.S. Sharmila as the new president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC). This significant development marks a new chapter in the political landscape of Andhra Pradesh.

Sharmila, the daughter of former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy and sister of current Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, brings a unique blend of political lineage and fresh perspectives to the Congress leadership in the state.

The official announcement from the party stated, “Congress president has appointed Y.S. Sharmila Reddy as the president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect.”

This appointment comes shortly after incumbent Gidugu Rudra Raju stepped down from the APCC chief post. The Congress expressed its appreciation for Rudra Raju’s contributions as PCC president and appointed him as a special invitee to the Congress Working Committee.

Sharmila, who previously led the YSR Telangana Party, merged her party with the Congress on January 4 in the presence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi.

Expressing her happiness and commitment to the party, Sharmila said, “I will work for the party in whatever capacity I can with utmost dedication and commitment. It was my father’s dream to see Rahul Gandhi as the Prime Minister of the country and I shall strive for the same.”

Reacting to Sharmila’s appointment, former PCC President Gidugu Rudra Raju expressed his belief that her entry into the Congress will strengthen the party. He hinted at upcoming changes in Andhra Pradesh politics after the Sankranti festival.

However, not everyone shared the same enthusiasm. Some within the Congress expressed apprehension about Sharmila’s appointment, citing her lack of a successful track record in politics. Former Congress MP G.V. Harsha Kumar questioned her suitability for bigger responsibilities in the party.

Political analyst Suresh Dharur offered a nuanced perspective, stating that Sharmila’s induction might provide a sense of existential purpose to the Congress but may not necessarily lead to dramatic electoral gains. He viewed it as a small step toward regaining political relevance.

Overall, Sharmila’s appointment as APCC president is a significant development that has the potential to reshape the political dynamics in Andhra Pradesh. It remains to be seen how she will navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead and whether she can lead the Congress to electoral success in the state.
