Rohit Sharma, who proved himself a successful skipper in the T20 format of cricket with his record in the Indian Premier League, took over as the white-ball captain of India after Virat Kohli stepped down.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made the announcement over a week ago, while revealing India’s 18-member Test squad for the upcoming three-match series against South Africa, starting December 26. “The All-India Senior Selection Committee also decided to name Mr Rohit Sharma as the Captain of the ODI & T20I teams going forward,” the board’s tweet read.
While many people have been wondering if there would be a change in Rohit Sharma’s salary as the new white-ball captain, a GQ report has mentioned that the opening batsman, who has been paid a sum of Rs 7 crore annually by virtue of holding an A+ contract, along with Virat Kohli and bowler Japsrit Bumrah, will receive the same amount of money even after taking over as the captain of the national team.
Speaking about the board’s decision to replace Virat Kohli with Rohit Sharma, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had earlier said, “It’s a call that the BCCI and the selectors took together. Actually, the BCCI had requested Virat to not step down as the T20I skipper but obviously, he did not agree. And the selectors then did not feel it right to have two different captains for two white-ball formats.”
