New Delhi witnessed a vibrant and culturally rich Pongal celebration today (January 14, 2026) at the residence of Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, L. Murugan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi graced the event as the chief guest, participating in traditional rituals, preparing Pongal, feeding cows, and delivering an inspiring address.
The festivities aligned with the vision of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ (One India, Great India), emphasizing national unity, cultural harmony, and gratitude toward farmers, nature, and the land. PM Modi highlighted Pongal as a global festival cherished by the Tamil community worldwide, describing Tamil culture as a shared heritage of all humanity—not limited to Tamil Nadu but belonging to the entire nation and the world. He stressed sustainable practices like water conservation, natural farming, and environmental protection, linking them to the festival’s essence of living in harmony with nature.
Prominent attendees included Tamil Nadu BJP leaders, representatives from various states, and several Tamil cinema celebrities. The cast and crew of the recently released film ‘Parasakthi’ (directed by Sudha Kongara) made a special appearance, adding a cinematic touch to the event. Actors Sivakarthikeyan, Ravi Mohan (Jayam Ravi), and music composer GV Prakash Kumar were present, showcasing Tamil pride on a national platform.
GV Prakash performed a soulful rendition of Thiruvasagam (from his upcoming Tamil pride album) in front of PM Modi, earning widespread applause. Sharing his excitement on X, GV Prakash posted: “Thiruvasagam was performed today in #Pongal2026 celebration at Delhi in front of our honourable prime minister Narendra Modi sir… @DrLMurugan. Will launch it soon officially”
After the event, Sivakarthikeyan spoke to the media, extending warm Pongal wishes: “Happy Pongal to everyone. Tamil people across the world are celebrating. Let positivity spread among us. Celebrating our culture in Delhi was truly joyful. This is the first time I’ve met our Prime Minister in person—it’s an unforgettable moment. Meeting him was a great honor. As for ‘Jana Nayagan’ [Vijay’s film], whenever it releases, it will be a celebration!”
He also addressed ongoing discussions around ‘Parasakthi’ (which released recently and received mixed responses amid some political controversy): “There’s no controversy or propaganda. Those who watch the full film understand its intent correctly—what we aimed to convey is reaching the audience, and that’s what matters.”
Ravi Mohan echoed the sentiment, calling it a great honor for Tamilians to celebrate Pongal in the national capital and praising the warm welcome from PM Modi.
The event, seen by many as a meaningful outreach to the Tamil community ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, blended tradition, culture, and national unity. Visuals of PM Modi chanting “Pongalo Pongal!” and joining the celebrations went viral, spreading festive cheer nationwide.
Happy Pongal to all! May this harvest festival bring prosperity, joy, and unity. Pongalo Pongal!
