The Municipal elections in Telangana are being held today. The Telangana State Election Commission (TSEC) is using facial recognition technology to determine the identity of voters. This is being done on a pilot basis in 10 polling booths in Kompally Municipality.
AIMIM supremo and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has expressed his objection to the use of the technology. Taking to Twitter, he has demanded its withdrawal.
The aim of the exercise is to weed out bogus voters. And Owaisi doesn’t like this to happen. “Have voters consented to be recorded when they enter a polling booth? What law permits the use of this technology? Are there any safeguards against breaches/misuse of the data? Right to privacy is a fundamental right and it cannot be violated so brazenly,” he tweeted out.
“The use of facial recognition technology is being deployed without any statutory basis. If the aim is the detection of electoral fraud, then the SEC must explain why the existing procedures for fraud detection are inadequate,” he said.
