Om Birla elected Lok Sabha speaker, unanimously

BJP MP Om Birla has been elected as the Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha.  It was a unanimous election, with even parties like Congress, TMC and others supporting him.  When NDA proposed his name on Tuesday, even non-NDA parties like YSRCP were the first to support him.

Birla is from Rajasthan.  Described as a grassroots politician, he has been a two-time MP from Kota.  He is seen as close to Union Home Minister Amit Shah.  

After his election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Personally, I remember working with Om Birla Ji for a long time. He represents Kota, a place that is mini-India, land associated with education and learning. He has been in public life for years. He began as a student leader and has been serving society since then without a break.”
