The first quarter of 2022 has been a tentative one for Tamil cinema as none of the films released so far has turned out to achieve blockbuster status. One should say that the industry is limping back to normalcy after close to two and a half years of coronavirus pandemic effect.
Starting from April 28th there are about 18 Tamil films featuring some of the top heroes of the industry releasing every week that should serve as a big treat for fans. On April 28th 'Hostel' starring Ashok Selvan and Priya Bhavani Shankar is releasing along with the biggie 'Kaathu Vaakula Rendu Kadhal' directed by Vignesh Shivan that has the dream cast of Vijay Sethupathi, Nayanthara and Samantha.
On May 5th the GVP-Sarathkumar starrer 'Ayngaran' is releasing after a long delay due to censor issues. On May 6th the Keerthy Suresh-Selvaraghavan starrer 'Saani Kayidham' directed by Arun Matheshwaran is releasing on Amazon Prime Video. R.K. Suresh's 'Vichithiran' produced by Bala is also hitting the screens on the same day.
May 13th is a big day for family and youth audiences as the Sivakarthikeyan-Priyanka Arul Mohan campus comedy 'Don' is hitting the screens worldwide. The Sundar C-Jai thriller 'Pattampoochi' will also be available in theaters the same day.
On May 20th Arunraja Kamaraj's 'Nenjukku Needhi' the Tamil remake of 'Article 15' is releasing in a record number of theaters. The film has Udhayanidhi Stalin and Aari among others.
On June 3rd one of the biggest films of the year in pan Indian cinema, 'Vikram' will storm theaters all over the globe. The film directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj stars Kamal, Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil.
Two weeks later on June 17th R. Balaji's 'Veetla Vishesham' and Arun Vijay's 'Yaanai' directed by Hari will be locking horns at the box office.
On June 24th its time for the already critically acclaimed 'Maamanithan' directed by Seenu Ramasamy to finally see the light of the day after a long delay. The intense family drama has music by Ilayaraja and Yuvan Shankar Raja has Vijay Sethupathi, S. Gayathrie and Guru Somasundaram competing for acting honors.
July 1st is the date when the world will get to see R. Madhavan as a director as his ambitious 'Rocketry The Nambi Effect' costarring Simran is hitting the screens. The film will have tough competition from Dhanush's out and out commercial entertainer after a long time 'Thiruchitrambalam' costarring Priya Bhavani Shankar, Raashi Khanna and Nithya Menen.
N. Linguswamy's comeback film 'The Warrior' starring Ram Pothineni and Krithi Shetty will release in Telugu and Tamil on July 14th amidst huge expectations.
August 12th will see another big box office clash as Sivakarthikeyan's Telugu/Tamil bilingual 'SK20' will be up against Samantha's 'Yashoda' which incidentally is also a Telugu/Tamil bilingual.
To round it all up on September 30th the biggest of the biggies the first part of Mani Ratnam's 'Ponniyin Selvan' will release worldwide. The film has music by A.R. Rahman and the ensemble cast that comprises of Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Prabhu, Jayaram, Nizhalgal Ravi, Sarathkumar, Parthiban, Aishwerya Lekshmi, Balaji Shakthivel and Lal.
