Starring Kamal Haasan, "Indian 2" is the much-needed follow-up to the 1996 smash. After a protracted production beset by several delays, the film, which finds Haasan returning in his legendary Senapathy, a vigilante against corruption, opens theatres on July 12, 2024. Under direction of S Shankar, the film is now slated for a digital release.
'Indian 2' will be available on Netflix South's platform in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam, it was recently revealed. The movie is set to premiere on August 9. Sharing the Kamal Haasan-star film's poster, Netflix remarked, "Thatha varaaru, kadhara vida poraanu. #Indian2 will be visiting Netflix on August 9 in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada!"
Previously, Netflix had obtained the post-theatrical OTT rights to 'Indian 2' for a sizable fee even before the movie's release. But given the poor box office performance of the movie—just over Rs 50 crore—there were rumors of Netflix trying to renegotiate the contract. Notwithstanding these problems, it seems the situation has been settled, opening a path for the OTT distribution of the movie.
Years after the first, "Indian 2" picks up Senapathy living in Taiwan as a martial arts guru. Under the direction of Chitra Aravindan (Siddharth), a group of YouTubers investigates corruption and starts a social media movement to bring Senapathy back to India. The hashtag #ComeBackIndian drives Senapathy to come back and keep his battle against corruption under progress. Young people motivated by him to reveal unethical behavior set off spectacular and sad events.
Key roles in the movie also fall to Siddharth, Rakul Preet Singh, and others. Future plans call for "Indian 3," a prequel to the series, to premiere in January 2025 and feature Kajal Aggarwal in a major part.
