Kalki 2898 AD: Amitabh turns Ashwatthama, But who is the epic character Ashwatthama

Nag Ashwin’s upcoming futuristic film, ‘Kalki 2898 AD,’ has been generating immense excitement since its announcement, especially with its stellar cast. The movie features Amitabh Bachchan, Prabhas, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone, and Disha Patani in leading roles, promising a cinematic experience like never before.

The recently released 21-second teaser has already captivated audiences. It opens with Bachchan’s character, dressed in earthy tones, deeply immersed in prayer within a cave, focusing his devotion on a Shiva linga. Against a backdrop of serene music, a child’s voice breaks the silence, questioning him about his identity and divinity. Bachchan’s character, with a commanding voice, responds, “Since time immemorial, I have awaited the arrival of the Avatar. I am the son of Guru Drona. I am Ashwatthama,” establishing a powerful presence.

Bachchan shared his experience of working on the film on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting the project’s unique creativity, execution, and technological advancements, along with the collaboration with such esteemed colleagues. In the film, Bachchan plays the immortal Ashwatthama, a significant character from the Hindu epic Mahabharata, adding a mythological and futuristic twist to the narrative.

Directed by Nag Ashwin, known for his acclaimed works like ‘Yevade Subramanyam’ and ‘Mahanati,’ ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ is set to be a mythology-inspired sci-fi extravaganza, promising a unique and captivating cinematic experience.

Now, all eyes are on the portrayal of the epic character Ashwatthama. In the Mahabharata, Ashwatthama is depicted as the son of Dronacharya, the revered teacher of the Pandavas and Kauravas. Known for his bravery and combat skills, Ashwatthama fought for the Kauravas during the Kurukshetra War. However, his story takes a dark turn as grief and rage drive him to commit dishonourable acts, leading to his cursed immortality and eternal isolation.

Ashwatthama’s character is believed to have been born with a gem on his forehead, granting him invincibility and magical powers. However, his gem was eventually removed as a punishment, leaving him vulnerable and cursed with suffering and immortality, serving as a reminder of his misdeeds.
