Jyotika Says ‘Karuppu’ Has a Soul Beyond Commercial Success

Karuppu may have opened to mixed reviews initially, but the Suriya and Trisha Krishnan starrer has now emerged as a massive box office success worldwide.

Directed by RJ Balaji, the film has reportedly grossed over ₹207 crore globally, making it the highest-grossing film in Suriya’s career so far.

Now, actress Jyothika has spoken about the film’s success and defended it against criticism during an appearance on “60 Minutes with Sudhir” on YouTube.

During the conversation, Sudhir compared the film to Vikram starring Kamal Haasan, saying that while “Karuppu” may not be the greatest film in Suriya’s career, fans were waiting for a celebratory commercial blockbuster from him.

Responding to the comment, Jyotika said she understands the importance of balancing meaningful cinema with commercial success.

“We’re very overwhelmed. Suriya always loves telling good stories and makes sure there’s a strong story in every film. But box office numbers are also important for actors. Nobody wants to be in losses. So commercial success matters too,” she explained.

At the same time, Jyotika emphasized that “Karuppu” is not just a routine mass entertainer and insisted that the film carries emotional depth and substance.

“If you watch ‘Karuppu,’ apart from being a complete fan and commercial film, there’s a story happening underneath. He’s playing a God-like character and there’s definitely something meaningful in the script. It’s not just one of those run-of-the-mill commercial films. It has its own soul,” she said.

She further praised Suriya’s performance in the climax portions, especially the emotional final moments of the film.

“The last ten minutes of the movie are brilliant. Suriya has performed exceptionally well. We’re extremely happy with all the love the film is receiving. It’s a celebration at home,” Jyotika added.

With strong word of mouth, massive audience support, and record-breaking collections, “Karuppu” has now become one of the biggest successes in Suriya’s career.
