The Fairfax County Court in Virginia, US, found that Johnny Depp had proven all charges against his ex-wife Amber Heard in a defamation case that ran for over six weeks. The jury found Johnny Depp was defamed by Amber Heard when she described herself in an op-ed as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” Although the op-ed did not mention Depp, he said that it pointed towards him and had hurt his career.
Jurors awarded Depp $15 million in damages from Heard, which the judge reduced to $10.35 million to comply with state limits on punitive damages. The panel ordered Depp to pay Heard $2 million in damages.
After the verdict was pronounced, Johnny took to social media to share his statement. He thanked the jury for giving his life back and explained why he took up the fight. He wrote that his life, the lives of his children and the people closest to him changed in the blink of an eyeThe statement reads, "And six years later, the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled. My decision to pursue this case, knowing very well the height of the legal hurdles that I would be facing and the inevitable, worldwide spectacle into my life, was only made after considerable thought."
Amber Heard also took to social media to express her disappointment with the judgement. She said that she was heartbroken to know that the mountain of evidence wasn't enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence and sway of her ex-husband. She called it a huge setback for other women.
