Late-night star Jimmy Kimmel posted an Instagram health update regarding his 7-year-old son Billy, who just had his third open heart surgery. Kimmel thanked the medical staff in a moving statement on Sunday and detailed the family's painful experience.
"Our boy Billy had his third (and hopefully final) open heart surgery this weekend," Kimmel said. "We entered this event with a great deal of optimism and almost as much fear and came out with a new valve inside a happy, healthy kid."
Billy's ailment gained global notice in 2017 after Kimmel poignantly described on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" the moment he found out about his son's cardiac problem. Soon after Billy was born, doctors had diagnosed him with Tetralogy of Fallot, a congenital cardiac disease. Billy had his first open heart surgery to fix a hole in his heart and a clogged pulmonary valve when he was just three days old.
Billy needed a second surgery seven months later. Kimmel utilized his position at that time to promote reasonably priced healthcare, saying, "No parent should ever have to determine if they can afford to preserve their child's life. That really ought not to happen. Not here.
Kimmel also gave his wife Molly credit for her amazing fortitude during their son's medical struggles in a recent Instagram post. He thanked Children's Hospital Los Angeles staff members profusely for their "immeasurable kindness and expertise."
Widespread support and well wishes for Billy's ongoing recovery have been expressed for the post.
