Ilaiyaraaja’s Music in Pithamagan and MSV Song Controversy Explained

In the film ‘Good Bad Ugly’, the song ‘Otha Roobai Tharen’ was used without prior permission, prompting music composer Ilaiyaraaja to issue a legal notice to the film crew. At a music launch event, music director Gangai Amaran criticized G.V. Prakash harshly. He questioned why G.V. Prakash used their song instead of his own and even claimed that the composer lacked skill.

During the audio launch of the film ’13/13 Lucky Nun’, producer Thenappan responded to the controversy. He said he heard Gangai Amaran’s remarks and didn’t understand why there was such anger towards G.V. Prakash. “He earns Rs. 7 crore but used Raja anna’s song. That doesn’t mean he’s incompetent,” he added. Thenappan defended Prakash, calling him a good man who had even waived his fee for many films. He emphasized that the director made the decision to use the song, not Prakash.

Thenappan further justified his point by referring to the film ‘Pithamagan’, which featured a song composed by the legendary M.S. Viswanathan, even though Ilaiyaraaja was the film’s music composer. “Can we say Ilaiyaraaja didn’t know his job just because another composer’s song was used?” he asked.

Actor S.V. Sekhar also addressed the issue, saying that Gangai Amaran overreacted in an interview. He mentioned that after seeing the interview, Ilaiyaraaja reportedly said, “First, I should file a case against him.” He concluded that conflicts in cinema are not permanent.
