Hima Das registered another victory at the Star Poznan Athletics Grand Prix in Poland, striking gold in the 200m sprint. Known as the ‘Dhing Express,’ the 19-year-old finished at 23.56 seconds. VK Vismaya who came third with 23.75 seconds also deserves mention. Hima had suffered from a back injury in April during the Asian Athletics Championships held in Doha. But looks like the athlete is back, and strongly.
The Indian national record holder for 400m hails from Dhing, Assam. She wanted to be a football player but decided against it due to the low chances of making a career in women’s football. Her teacher in school played a role in her decision to take up running.
Last year, the athlete was presented an Arjuna Award for excellence in sports. She is definitely a source of inspiration, especially to young Indian girls. Hope to see her sprint to many more victories.
