The voter turnout in the GHMC polls, held on December 1, was low but it was not as abysmal as it was thought to be till almost evening. The numbers picked up drastically in the last leg.
It was just about 8.9% by 11 am. And the percentage was only 29.76 or thereabouts by 4 pm. The turnout was expected to be farcical at this rate. However, the final figures are at 45.71%. This is higher than the 2016 figure, which was 45.27%, and the 2009 figure, which was 42.02%.
Contrary to analyses that an extended weekend and coronavirus affected the turnout, it seems otherwise if the previous turnouts are to be taken into consideration.
It’s estimated at nearly 7,50,000 voters turned up to vote after 5 pm. In all, 27,22,891 voted. About 18,57,041 men voted, while 15,97,438 women voted. Kanchanbag, RC Puram, Patancheru, Bharati Nagar, Gajularamam, Nawab Saheb Kunta, Buddhanagar, Dattatreya Nagar, Rangareddy Nagar, Begumpet registered a turnout of more than the overall figure.
Yusufguda, Mehadipatnam, Saidabad, Santosh Nagar and Miyapur registered lowest figures.
