In a remarkable display of personal commitment to public welfare, Andhra Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister, Pawan Kalyan, has used a substantial portion of his personal savings to fund a critical water supply project for the residents of Konidela village in the Kurnool district.
The project involved the construction of a new overhead water tank, completed at a personal cost of ₹50 lakh to the Deputy CM. This initiative ensures that approximately 2,000 villagers now have access to a consistent supply of clean, chlorinated drinking water. A plaque at the site currently stands as a testament to his individual financial contribution.
The plan was first announced during Mr. Kalyan’s visit to the village in June 2025—a location that notably shares his family surname. The project was subsequently executed under the government’s Single Village Scheme, demonstrating how public-private cooperation, even on a personal level, can accelerate essential development work.
The move has drawn significant attention. Supporters have quickly lauded it as a shining example of “people-first leadership,” celebrating a high-ranking official who chooses to solve a community issue directly and immediately, using his own wealth.
However, the action has also sparked some debate. One critic noted the irony that Mr. Kalyan, who heads the ministry responsible for rural water supply with an annual budget exceeding ₹20,000 crore, chose to bypass official channels. This perspective raises questions about governmental efficiency and resource allocation for routine infrastructure needs.
Regardless of the official funding debate, for the 2,000 residents of Konidela, the newly operational water tank is a vital necessity delivered, symbolizing a tangible improvement in their daily lives thanks to the Deputy CM’s personal generosity.
