DMDK Chief,Captain Vijayakanth Breathes His Last

Captain Vijayakanth, the charismatic founder-leader of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) and a stalwart actor, has left an indelible mark on Tamil Nadu’s political and cinematic landscape as news of his passing spreads. His demise comes after a battle with Covid-19, a challenge he faced with resilience and courage.

The veteran actor’s health took a critical turn in November, leading to his admission to MIOT Hospital in Chennai. Persistent cough and throat pain prompted a 14-day observation under the vigilant care of medical professionals. Despite the best efforts, Captain Vijayakanth’s condition deteriorated, compelling his placement on ventilator support due to severe breathing difficulties. The official announcement by the DMDK on X confirmed the loss of this prominent leader.

Before entering the political arena, Vijayakanth enjoyed an illustrious career in Tamil cinema, earning the moniker “Puratchi Kalingar” for his portrayal of patriotic and heroic characters. His cinematic journey, which began as an antagonist in the 1979 film “Inikkum Ilamai,” showcased his versatility and prowess. Noteworthy films such as ‘Doorathu Idi Muzhakkam’ (1980), featured in the Indian Panorama of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), and others like ‘Amman Koil Kizhakkaley,’ ‘Chinna Gounder,’ ‘Vaidegi Kathirundal,’ ‘Vallarasu,’ ‘Vanathai Pola,’ ‘Captain Prabakaran,’ ‘Ulavu Thurai,’ ‘Kannupada Pokuthayya,’ and ‘Ramana’ solidified his legacy in the film industry. His final on-screen appearance was in the 2015 Tamil film ‘Sagaptham.’

Transitioning seamlessly into politics, Vijayakanth served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016. In 2005, he founded the DMDK, becoming its chairman in the legislative assembly. Representing the constituencies of Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam, he made significant contributions to the political landscape. His departure creates a void that resonates deeply in the hearts of his supporters and across Tamil Nadu.

Captain Vijayakanth is survived by his wife, Premalatha, and two sons, Vijay Prabhakar and Shanmuga Pandian. As the entire film industry and political spectrum mourn the loss of this multifaceted personality, his legacy lives on in the hearts of those who admired his cinematic brilliance and admired his political acumen.
