The Tamil film industry is mourning the unexpected passing of director Vikram Sukumaran, who died of a sudden heart attack. He was known for helming critically appreciated films like Madhayanai Koottam (2013) and the more recent Ravana Koottam (2023).
Originally from Ramanathapuram district, Vikram Sukumaran began his career in cinema under the mentorship of legendary filmmaker Balu Mahendra. He made his directorial debut with Madhayanai Koottam, starring Kathir and Oviya, which earned him recognition for its realistic storytelling. A decade later, he directed Ravana Koottam, featuring Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, which was both a critical and commercial success.
In addition to his directorial work, Vikram also appeared in supporting roles in a few films, including Polladhavan and Kodiveeran.
Tragedy struck when he traveled to Madurai for a story discussion with a producer. On his return journey to Chennai by bus, he reportedly experienced severe chest pain. Despite being rushed to a hospital and receiving intensive treatment, he could not be saved.
His body has since been brought back to Chennai, where members of the film industry are paying their last respects. Actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his condolences, stating how deeply saddened he was by the loss of the talented director.
