Covid Cases in TS: Gandhi Hospital on strict vigil

In response to the emergence of a new sub-variant of the Coronavirus, JN1, detected in Kerala, the Centre has issued a high alert for all states, emphasizing the need for "constant vigilance" down to the district level. This sub-variant, believed to be more infectious than its parent BA 2.86 variant, has prompted the Union health ministry to instruct all state governments to implement "public health measures and other precautions to minimize the risk of increased disease transmission."

While medical professionals currently indicate no significant cause for immediate concern, Dr. M. Raja Rao, superintendent of Gandhi Hospital, a key Covid treatment center in Telangana, urges the adoption of Covid-appropriate behavior, especially among individuals with comorbidities, the elderly, and children. Dr. Raja Rao strongly advocates a return to the regular use of masks to mitigate potential risks.

He underscores the importance of individuals with respiratory symptoms such as cold, cough, and influenza-like illnesses (ILIs) undergoing Covid testing and self-isolating until test results are available. Dr. Raja Rao reassures that the hospital is well-prepared to provide treatment, with dedicated beds for general patients and pregnant women.

Highlighting the symptoms associated with the new variant—fever, runny nose, sore throat, and headache—Dr. Raja Rao emphasizes the need for vigilance and readiness to conduct tests if cases surge.

Director of Public Health Dr. G. Srinivasa Rao reassures the public that the situation is not alarming and that the state is adhering to Central guidelines. The state, he notes, is currently reporting sporadic Covid cases. A senior doctor underscores the potential long-term health impacts of mild Covid symptoms, emphasizing the importance of understanding the cumulative degradation of individuals' health with each infection.

The Centre advises states to prioritize testing, ensuring an increased number of RT-PCR tests, and sending positive samples for genome sequencing to promptly detect new variants. The focus is on enhancing surveillance and adhering to Central guidelines to effectively manage and mitigate the potential impact of the new sub-variant.
