The ‘Chalo Vijayawada’ rally by Andhra Pradesh government employees and teachers in Vijayawada today became a roaring success. It was called to protest the Jaganmohan Reddy government’s recent pay revision scheme. The protestors said that the pay revision policy is arbitrary and dark. The government had on Wednesday failed to give any assurance.
The Pay Revision Commission Struggle Committee leaders have said the protests are historic.
Supporting the protests, the Telugu Desam Party said that thousands of government employees fighting for their rights had hit Vijayawada amidst various obstacles posed by the Police. “TDP and all its affiliated Unions have extended its full support to the protesting employees,” the party said.
There is a view that government employees are acting with a sense of self-entitlement. “Highly irresponsible of the employees to strike at a time of crisis. People are fed up with corruption in government offices as it is. Now, this self-entitlement when many are struggling to make ends meet is indefensible,” wrote Kalyan Chakravarthy, the Resident Editor of TNIE.
It has to be seen how CM Jagan is going to handle the political fallout of the resounding protests.
