BJP national spokesperson Nupur Sharma has been accused of offending the religious sentiments of the Muslim community while appearing on an English-language news channel to discuss the Gyanvapi Mosque issue. She allegedly made statements against Prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam.
Since then, the BJP leader has been receiving death threats and rape threats via social media. She has already raised a complaint and the Delhi police are looking into the same.
Netizens belonging to the Muslim community are saying that the BJP leader should have refrained from making offensive comments about the founder of Islam. They are accusing her of wanting to create communal disturbances. Scores of social media posts are calling out Nupur Sharma for allegedly being a bigot. “Not a single ‘well-meaning’ leader has expressed outrage over BJP National spokesperson, Nupur Sharma’s insult of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) on national television that was clearly aimed at creating communal unrest, provoke and hurt the sentiments of Muslims in India,” columnist Rana Ayyub has said.
On the other hand, supporters of Freedom of Expression are saying that the police and courts must step in right now so that Nupur Sharma’s life is not harmed.
