Balakrishna’s speech: Legacy, gratitude, politics writ large

Speaking at the audio release function of 'Jai Simha', Nandamuri Balakrishna spoke at length, touching upon NTR's legacy, his latest film, his son-in-law Nara Lokesh (who was the chief guest), and more.

"The Krishna district has given birth to so many great men.  NTR garu was one such great person.  As a producer, he had made 'Thodu Dongalu' and 'Picchi Pullayya' in the 1950s, but the films didn't do well.  Even in those days, he lost Rs. 4 lacs on these movies although the films received the President's medals.  He then realized that time was not yet ripe for such experimental movies.  He then did 'Jai Simha', wielding the sword," Balayya began saying.

"People have made cinema a necessity in their lives.  I am lucky to be getting to work with very knowledgeable technicians and artists.  I have a lot to learn.  I always yearn to offer something new.  That's why I have been working with the likes of Krish, Boyapati Srinu and Puri Jagannadh," the actor said.

"Coming to 'Jai Simha', it was my intention to work with KS Ravikumar for more than seven years.  But things didn't work out for long.  Finally, this project happened.  Music director Chirantan Bhatt is a talented man.  And writer Diamond Ratna, who also penned the lines for 'Legend'.  Coming to my cameraman Ram Prasad, it's the expression on his face that I look out for as soon as I am done with my shot," Balayya added.

"NTR garu and ANR garu are regarded as the two eyes of Telugu cinema.  If the former taught discipline, the latter taught us to stay away from flattery," the actor said.

"There are millions of Telugus in non-Telugu states as well.  We are making the biopic on NTR garu so that everybody in India knows his story," he added.

Balayya was proud of NTR's political legacy.  "TDP is his 'biksha'.  He was the pioneer of many innovative schemes that others have been following.  Those who are being eulogized for following such schemes should be indebted to him," he said.

About his 'alludu', Balayya said, "Lokesh is a youngster who has a thorough understanding of things.  I am lucky to have got a son-in-law like him.  Andhra is fortunate that the state has a Minister of his foresight."
