Legal experts speculate that hidden evidence in the involuntary manslaughter case against actor Alec Baldwin could contribute to the release of "Rust" movie armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed from a New Mexico prison.
March saw Hannah Gutierrez Reed sentenced to eighteen months in jail for the deadly shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins from a live round fired from a pretend gun Baldwin carried on the 2021 film set. She is now appealing her conviction.
Two days after the trial started, Friday the Baldwin case fell apart when a judge decided that prosecutors had not adequately given over material to the defense. Baldwin's lawyers said the authorities withheld information regarding a guy transporting unexamined ammo linked to the investigation.
Duncan Levin, a New York defense attorney, said, "The deliberate hiding of vital evidence by the state has damaged the credibility of the whole judicial process. Justice demands an urgent overturn of Hannah's erroneous conviction."
Gutierrez Reed's counsel revealed intentions to submit a motion for her release following the untimely termination of the trial. Former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani said, "This evidence is more exculpatory and cleanses Gutierrez Reed even more than Baldwin."
According to a crime scene technician, investigators received ammunition possibly connected to the case following Gutierrez Reed's conviction. These bullets, though, were not tested or included in the "Rust" case inventory.
Baldwin's defense team contended that by hiding information, prosecutors broke the Brady rule. Baldwin's case was dismissed by the judge Friday with prejudice, labeling the evidence withheld "intentional and deliberate."
Based on the judge's judgement of deliberate misconduct, Gutierrez Reed's attorney, Jason Bowles, said plans to seek her freedom. Legal analyst Joey Jackson sees her conviction being reversed.
