On 22 September 1978, a young actor named Konidela Siva Shankara Varaprasad stepped into Telugu cinema through Pranam Khareedu. From that day forward, the world came to know him as Chiranjeevi—a name that would echo in the hearts of millions for decades to come. Today, as we celebrate 47 glorious years, we honor the film that began it all and the man who grew into a phenomenon, a brother, a son, a family member, and ultimately—the Megastar.
Pranam Khareedu, directed by K. Vasu, is a powerful social drama based on C. S. Rao’s play. The story highlights the tyranny of a feudal landlord who exploits the poor and crushes their dignity. When a newly married bride is forcibly taken away on her wedding night, the film exposes the harsh realities of class division and social injustice. Chiranjeevi, though in an early role, left an unforgettable mark with his intensity and screen presence, signaling the arrival of a star who would change the course of Telugu cinema.
Reflecting on this journey, Chiranjeevi shared an emotional note:
“Through this film, I have given life to me as an actor… as your elder brother, son, family member, Megastar. I will always be grateful to the Telugu film audience who supported and admired me every moment. I have completed 155 films till today—the reason for that is your selfless love. The many awards and honors I have received in these 47 years are not mine, they are yours. Wishing that this bond of love continues forever.”
As fans and admirers celebrate this milestone, one truth remains—Pranam Khareedu was not just a debut; it was the birth of an era, the beginning of the Megastar legacy.
