29 Killed After Bus Falls off Yamuna Expressway

29 people lost their lives after a bus heading from Lucknow to Anand Vihar (Delhi) slipped off the Yamuna Expressway near Agra. The bus carrying around 45 to 50 passengers is said to have fallen approximately 50 feet in the gap between two flyovers. It is suggested that the driver may have lost control of the bus after falling asleep. The accident took place at around 4:30 am. Villagers from Baghel Thar managed to extricate 20 passengers from the vehicle. The police then arrived at the spot and rushed the injured to the hospital. 2 hours later bulldozers and cranes lifted the bus but the remaining passengers had already died.

NG Ravi Kumar, DM, Agra said: “It appears that the driver was sleepy while driving. Till now 29 people have been declared dead and a rescue operations is underway. The bus fell from 50 foot into a gorge (naala).” Bablu Kumar, SSP Agra, said: “It is an unfortunate incident and efforts are on to rescue the survivors. Till now more than 29 dead bodies have recovered and the survivors have been sent to hospital for treatment.” Rs. 5 lakhs has been announced for the families of the deceased individuals by the Uttar Pradesh Roadways. A transport commissioner, divisional commissioner and IG Agra will be investigating the matter and determining the cause of the accident within 24 hours.

Such accidents seem to be on the increase. Lives are being lost in large numbers and often the reason is directly or indirectly linked to technology.
