Who is the Director of Rajinikanth’s 173rd Film?

Confusion continues to swirl in Tamil cinema circles over the director of Superstar Rajinikanth’s highly anticipated 173rd film, which is being produced by Kamal Haasan.

The project was initially announced with Sundar C at the helm, but in a sudden twist, Sundar C stepped down from the director’s role. This has prompted the Rajinikanth-Rajkamal team to intensify their search for a suitable replacement.

Following the official announcement on November 5, Kamal Haasan addressed Sundar C’s exit, stating, “This search will continue until a story appeals to Rajini. A new director may be chosen, possibly a young director.” Reliable sources indicate that Nithilan Saminathan, known for directing the hit thriller Maharaja, and Ramkumar, director of Parking, have pitched their scripts to Rajinikanth. It now seems one of these two has been finalized as the director.

Amid the buzz, rumors have surfaced suggesting that Dhanush could take the directorial reins, though no concrete confirmation exists.

The production house has planned an official reveal of the director and storyline on Rajinikanth’s birthday, December 12. The film is eyeing a grand Pongal 2027 release.

Currently immersed in the shooting of Jailer 2, Rajinikanth plans to allocate dates for this project post-wrap-up. Subsequently, the much-hyped collaboration between Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, to be directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, will kick off.
