The United States president Donald Trump has now threatened to permanently freeze US funding to the World Health Organization if improvements aren't made in the next 30 days. Earlier in April, Washington suspended payments to WHO claiming the organisation to be joining with China in covering up the coronavirus pandemic.
Yesterday, Donald Trump tweeted photos of a letter he had sent to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and called it a self explanatory letter. In the letter Trump has cited some of the instances of WHO's mismanagement of the pandemic such as ignoring early reports of the virus emergence and closeness to China.
In the letter, Trump has written "It is clear the repeated missteps by you and your organization in responding to the pandemic have been extremely costly for the world. The only way forward for the World Health Organization is if it can actually demonstrate independence from China. If the World Health Organization does not commit to major substantive improvements within the next 30 days, I will make my temporary freeze of United States funding to the World Health Organization permanent and reconsider our membership in the organization". Recently, WHO had announced launching an independent review of the coronavirus pandemic.
