The much-awaited gangster drama Arasan, directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Vetrimaaran and starring Silambarasan TR (STR) in the lead with Vijay Sethupathi in a pivotal role, officially went on floors today (December 9, 2025) in Kovilpatti, Tamil Nadu. Being part of the extended Vada Chennai cinematic universe, the film has already created massive hype among fans.

The explosive promo video released on music composer Anirudh Ravichander’s birthday in October showcased Silambarasan in a stunning dual get-up – a young, ripped look and a rugged 45-year-old avatar – and instantly went viral. On November 25, it was officially confirmed that Vijay Sethupathi has joined the cast in a crucial role. Familiar Vada Chennai faces Samuthirakani and Kishore are also reprising key characters. Reports suggest Samantha, Nelson Dilipkumar, Manikandan, and others will be seen in important roles. The film is being bankrolled by Kalanithi Maran’s V Creations, with Anirudh scoring the music.

After attending an event in Malaysia recently, Silambarasan had promised fans he would join the sets within three days – and he has kept his word. A simple pooja was held yesterday (December 8), and shooting commenced today. Vetri Maaran and his team had already scouted locations in and around Kovilpatti a few weeks ago.

For his younger character, Vetrimaaran asked STR to shed around 12 kg. The actor flew to Dubai earlier, underwent intense physical transformation, and even trained in advanced action techniques before returning fully prepared.

The first schedule in Kovilpatti is expected to last three weeks. One of Silambarasan’s characters is reportedly called “Madurai Tiger”. The story is said to begin in Madurai and travel all the way to North Chennai. Today’s shoot started with sports sequences featuring STR as an athlete, followed by high-octane action blocks. Vijay Sethupathi is expected to join in the second schedule for major action portions. Cinematography is by Vetri Maaran’s trusted lensman Velraj, while stunts are choreographed by Dhilip Subbarayan.

Silambarasan’s arrival in the southern districts has sent local fans into a frenzy – huge welcome posters of Arasan have been put up across Kovilpatti, and the actor reportedly plans to meet fans in the coming days.

With the deadly combo of Vetri Maaran, Silambarasan TR, Vijay Sethupathi, and Anirudh, Arasan is already being hailed as one of the biggest Tamil films in the making. The film is slated for a grand release on December 31, 2026.
