Veteran Actor Kota Srinivasa Rao Passes Away

Veteran actor and Padma Shri awardee Kota Srinivasa Rao passed away on Sunday morning at his residence in Film Nagar, Hyderabad, after a prolonged illness. He was 83.

Born on July 10, 1942, in Kankipadu of Krishna district, Kota Srinivasa Rao developed a keen interest in theatre from a very young age. Before stepping into films, he worked at the State Bank of India, balancing his job with his passion for drama and stage performances.

In 1968, he married Rukmini, and the couple had three children—two daughters and a son, Kota Prasad. Tragedy struck the family in June 2010, when Prasad passed away in a road accident.

Kota made his film debut with Pranam Khareedu in 1978, but it was his stellar performance in Pratighatana (1985) that earned him widespread recognition and critical acclaim. Over the years, he became one of the most respected and versatile character actors in Indian cinema.

His illustrious career includes unforgettable roles in films such as Repati Pourulu, Aha Naa Pellanta, Siva, Sathruvu, Gaayam, Money, Hello Brother, Aame, Little Soldiers, Ganesh, Aa Naluguru, Athadu, Bommarillu, Sarkar, Attarintiki Daredi, Aadavari Matalaku Arthale Verule, and Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum, among many others.

Renowned for his ability to effortlessly portray a wide range of roles—from cold-hearted villains to endearing comic and emotional characters—Kota acted in over 750 films across Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi languages, leaving an indelible mark on Indian cinema.

In addition to his acting career, Kota also made his mark in politics. He was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from Vijayawada East constituency, where he served with distinction.

In recognition of his vast contributions to Indian cinema and public service, he was awarded the Padma Shri in 2015.

Kota Srinivasa Rao’s demise marks the end of a glorious era. His life, filled with artistic brilliance and personal resilience, will continue to inspire generations of actors and cinema lovers alike.
