A UK court has turned down the Indian Government's request to extradite a London couple who are facing charges of hiring assassins to kill their 11-year-old adopted son, Gopal Sejani, in India so that they could claim his life insurance. They are also accused of plotting the murder of their adopted son's brother-in-law.
The couple, Arti Dhir (55) and Kaval Raijada (30), from London, reportedly travelled to a town in Gujarat to adopt the orphaned boy, who was living with his sister and her husband, on the pretext of providing a better life for him. They took an insurance policy in Gopal's name soon after the adoption. "It is alleged that the policy would payout after 10 years, or in the event of Gopal's death and Dhir made two payments of £15,000, knowing an insurance claim would give them around £150,000," according to a report.
Gopal was abducted and stabbed before being abandoned on the side of a road by the killers, who had previously attempted twice to murder Gopal. Gopal's brother-in-law, who tried to save him, was also injured in the process. Both of them succumbed to their injuries a few days later. However, the insurance policy never paid out.
