Tragedy in Karur: TVK Leader Vijay Appears Before CBI After 107 Days

In a development that has sent shockwaves through Tamil Nadu politics, CBI officials today (January 12, 2026) commenced their investigation into TVK leader Vijay regarding the tragic Karur stampede. This investigation takes place exactly 107 days after the unfortunate incident occurred on September 27, 2025.

On September 27 last year, a massive election campaign rally was held by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in Velusamypuram, Karur district. In a field packed with lakhs of fans and party workers, an unexpected stampede broke out, resulting in the death of 41 people, including women and children.

Following widespread complaints and an order from the Supreme Court, the case was handed over to the CBI.The investigation, currently underway at the CBI headquarters in Delhi, is reportedly focusing on several critical points: Why were security arrangements not strengthened when the crowd size exceeded the permitted limit?One side alleges that the primary cause of the stampede was Vijay’s seven-hour delay in arriving at the public meeting.

Investigating officers have reportedly sought an explanation as to why Vijay returned to Chennai immediately, despite being aware of the stampede and the resulting fatalities.

After returning to Chennai, Vijay expressed that the incident had caused him “indescribable grief.” Subsequently, he invited the families of the deceased to his residence in Panaiyur, Chennai, to offer personal condolences and financial assistance. He also committed to sponsoring the educational expenses of the children from the affected families.

However, the TVK legal team has already submitted video evidence to the CBI, maintaining that “lapses in security by the government and the police department are the true reasons behind this incident.”

The conclusion of this investigation is expected to reveal the truth regarding who was responsible for the crowd management failure. With the 2026 Assembly Elections approaching, this development is being viewed as a major turning point in Tamil Nadu politics.
