US President Donald Trump today said that he is ready to mediate between India and Pakistan on Kashmir. However, he also added that India can handle the matter on its own.
“I have a very good relationship with (Pakistan) Prime Minister Imran Khan. Pakistan has a problem with terror but they are working on it. I can mediate on Kashmir, which has been a thorn for a long time. There are two sides to the story,” Trump said.
Last year, Trump famously “revealed” that Modi had asked him to mediate on Kashmir. Speaking about that, the US President said, “I didn’t say anything about that (being mediator). Kashmir obviously is a big problem between India and Pakistan, they are going to work out their problem. They have been doing it for a long time.”
He refused to comment on the burning issue of the Citizenship Amendment Act. “It is for India to do, and hopefully they will do the right thing,” the Potus said.
Commenting on Trump’s remarks at today’s presser, columnist Minhaz Merchant said, “In the end, Donald Trump sidestepped the four issues journos tried to bait him with: 1) CAA—India’s internal affair 2) Kashmir— India can handle it 3) Delhi violence— No comment 4) Religious freedom—200 million Muslims in India enjoy religious freedom as do Christians.”
