Movie showing intimate scenes of 13-year-old actress banned

A movie that has won several awards in international film festivals has been pulled out of theaters as it shows intimate scenes between the lead actress who was only thirteen years old at the time of filming and older costars.

‘The Third Wife’ a Vietnamese film directed by Ash Mayfair is set in 19th century and is about 14-year-old May (played by thirteen-year-old Nguyen Phuong Tra My) who becomes the third wife of wealthy landowner Hung. Soon she learns that she can only gain status by asserting herself as a woman who can give birth to a male child. May’s hope to change her status turns into a real and tantalizing possibility when she gets pregnant. Faced with forbidden love and its devastating consequences, May finally comes to an understanding of the brutal truth: the options available to her are few and far between.

Though ‘The Third Wife’ is enjoying success in North America and other territories it has been pulled out of theaters from its homeland Vietnam where the censorship is very strict subjects it finds morally, socially or religiously sensitive, or ones it considers too violent.
