Actress and BJP leader Kasthuri is facing potential arrest following her controversial comments about Telugu people, which sparked widespread outrage. Kasthuri remarked that Telugu people historically served as maids in the royal courts, which angered Telugu organizations and leaders, prompting them to lodge complaints across various districts in Tamil Nadu.
Kasthuri's comments intersect with the complex backdrop of Dravidian ideologies in Tamil Nadu, where some narratives argue that Brahmins are not native Tamils.
Challenging these claims, Kasthuri stated, “Telugus are the ones who came to serve the harem women during the days of the kings. If those Telugus, who came 300 years ago to serve a king’s harem, now claim to be Tamil, then who can question the Tamil identity of Brahmins who also settled here?”
Kasthuri further suggested that the anti-Brahmin sentiment in Tamil Nadu is driven by Brahmins' moral stances, such as opposing property looting and infidelity. Her remarks inflamed both the Telugu and Tamil communities, leading to intense backlash on social media.
Despite facing widespread criticism, Kasthuri issued an apology and attempted to explain her comments through multiple tweets. She emphasized her respect for the Telugu people and accused the Dravidian party of misrepresenting her statements.
Despite her attempts to clarify and retract her statements, many in the Telugu community remain unconvinced, asserting that her original speech was not misrepresented.
