Various measures are initiated by Indian Railways to increase the number of passengers utilizing its services. As part of the BJP-led Centre’s prestigious ‘Digital India’ project, Railways have tied up with Google to provide ‘wi-fi’ facilities free-of-cost to passengers at Railway Stations.
Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore, Nungambakkam, Tambaram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Trichy, Madurai, Rameswaram, Arakkonam, Katpadi, Coimbatore, Mettupalayam, Coonoor, Ooty and a few Railway Stations at Karnataka and Kerala have been provided with free wi-fi facility.
A passenger can get free access to internet using this facility for a maximum of 30 minutes through his/her mobile phone or lap-top. Status of moving and delayed trains can also be accessed. As passengers have welcomed this move, it is said that Railways are planning to expand this facility to more Stations in the months to come.
