In response to the ongoing controversy surrounding Kamal Haasan’s recent remarks on the Kannada language, the South Indian Actors’ Association (Nadigar Sangam), led by its president Nasser, has issued a strong statement in support of the veteran actor.

The statement highlights Kamal Haasan’s immense contribution to Indian cinema, describing him as a legendary artist whose influence transcends regional boundaries. “Kamal Haasan is not just a Tamil actor; he is an artist of national and global stature who has consistently championed the richness of all Indian languages,” the statement read.

Nasser recalled Kamal Haasan’s long-standing ties with the Kannada film industry, including his deep friendship with the late Dr. Rajkumar, who launched Haasan’s production house Raaj Kamal Films with the first clap for Raaj Paarvai. The association also noted Kamal’s support during the time of Dr. Rajkumar’s abduction, and his consistent humanitarian work in Karnataka through the Karnataka Kamal Haasan Charity Movement over the past four decades.

The controversy began after Kamal Haasan referred to the Kannada actor Shivrajkumar as “a Kannada who came after me, a Tamilian, in our artistic family” during the audio launch of Thug Life. The statement clarifies that his words were spoken with affection and were misinterpreted by a few, leading to unnecessary outrage.

“Kamal Haasan has always promoted unity and respect among cultures. To paint him as being against the Kannada language is unjust and misleading,” the statement emphasized.

The Actors’ Association urged the people of Karnataka, along with industry and political leaders, to view Haasan’s remarks in their intended spirit — as an expression of deep affection and cultural unity — and to put an end to the misinformation being spread.

“Art and language transcend all boundaries. Only love, mutual respect, and cultural appreciation can unite us and lead to a prosperous future,” the statement concluded.
