Sony Pictures Networks India Launches Sony VIZHA, New Tamil Entertainment Channel

New Tamil general entertainment channel to launch in October 2026 with a focus on premium, culturally rooted storytelling

Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) has announced the launch of its new Tamil general entertainment channel, Sony VIZHA, which is set to go live in October 2026. The announcement marks SPNI’s entry into the Tamil entertainment space, with the network promising a fresh mix of premium fiction, reality formats, movies and large-scale entertainment.

Sony VIZHA aims to bring stories that are deeply rooted in Tamil culture, language, emotions and everyday life, while presenting them with the scale and production values associated with SPNI’s entertainment portfolio. The channel’s content strategy will extend across television and digital platforms, with an emphasis on creating stories that connect strongly with Tamil audiences while having wider appeal.

Name and Logo Revealed on Independence Day

SPNI unveiled the Sony VIZHA name and logo on Independence Day through a special rendition of ‘Tamizh Thai Vaazhthu’ performed by children. The iconic Tamil invocation, traditionally sung at the beginning of important occasions across Tamil Nadu, was chosen to reflect the channel’s cultural positioning.

The imagery and sentiment associated with Tamil pride spreading in every direction have become a key inspiration for Sony VIZHA. The channel intends to tell stories that originate from the cultural soil of Tamil Nadu while capturing the warmth, memories, aspirations and changing perspectives of its people.

The word ‘Vizha’ means celebration or festival in Tamil. The name therefore reflects the channel’s core philosophy – a celebration of Tamil stories, talent, music, family, aspirations and popular entertainment.

A Contemporary Identity with Strong Tamil Roots

The Sony VIZHA logo features yellow and electric blue. Yellow draws inspiration from colours strongly associated with celebrations in Tamil Nadu, including turmeric and marigold, while electric blue adds a contemporary and premium touch to the brand identity.

According to SPNI, the visual identity represents a channel that is culturally rooted, emotionally relevant and globally ambitious.

What SPNI Says About Sony VIZHA

Rajaraman Sundaram, Chief Content Officer – South Regional, Sony Pictures Networks India, said that the network is entering Tamil entertainment with humility and respect for the region’s rich creative heritage.

“With Sony VIZHA, we are taking a heartfelt step into Tamil entertainment. This is a market with a rich creative legacy, a deeply expressive language and audiences who have always embraced stories with emotion, honesty and cultural pride,” he said.

He added that the channel aims to create premium stories that feel close to home while reflecting the changing tastes of a new generation of Tamil viewers.

“Our hope is to build premium stories that feel close to home while reflecting the confidence and curiosity of a new generation of Tamil viewers – sharper, faster, funnier, and unafraid to look beyond the four walls of the home,” Sundaram added.

He further explained that the idea behind Sony VIZHA is inspired by the sentiment of Tamil pride spreading in every direction.

“That sentiment inspires Sony VIZHA – a celebration of Tamil culture, deeply rooted in emotion and imagined for a wider world,” he said.

Backed by SPNI’s Popular Entertainment Legacy

Sony VIZHA will draw from SPNI’s long-standing experience in creating popular television franchises. The network is behind some of India’s most recognised entertainment brands, including Kaun Banega Crorepati, Indian Idol, CID and Crime Patrol.

However, the new Tamil channel is expected to develop a distinct identity rather than simply replicate existing formats. SPNI describes Sony VIZHA as local in soul, emotionally relevant in storytelling, premium in execution and wide in appeal.

The channel’s programming slate is expected to include original fiction, global reality formats, movies and tentpole entertainment, with further details about the shows and launch lineup to be announced soon.

With its October 2026 launch, Sony VIZHA is set to become SPNI’s new Tamil entertainment destination, bringing together Tamil cultural identity and contemporary premium entertainment.
