The Indian Film Federation has officially submitted 29 films, including six Tamil films, for consideration at next year’s Academy Awards. However, the final selection has left Tamil cinema fans disappointed, as not a single Tamil film made the cut.
Among those films, the Tamil entries were Vijay Sethupathi’s ‘Maharaja’, Chiyaan Vikram’s ‘Thangalaan’, Soori’s ‘Kottukkaali’, Raghava Lawrence and SJ Suryah starrer ‘Jigarthanda Double X’, Mari Selvaraj’s ‘Vaazhai’ and Pari Elavazhagan’s ‘Jama’. Despite the strong contenders, none were selected to move forward in the competition.
From the 29 films across various languages — including 12 Hindi films, 6 Telugu films, 4 Malayalam films, 3 Marathi films, and 1 Odia film — the Hindi film “Laapataa Ladies” has been officially selected to represent India in the Best International Feature category at the 2024 Oscars. The chosen movie is a highly acclaimed emotional comedy drama.
This exclusion has sparked frustration among Tamil film enthusiasts, who were eagerly hoping for a nomination this year. The absence of a Tamil film in the Oscar race has undoubtedly left a gap in what many anticipated to be a promising year for Kollywood on the global stage.
