Thirumoolar as the First Communist Uniting Humanity Under One God

Actor-director Samuthirakani shared his thoughts during the national convention of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) held in Madurai. Speaking on stage, he reminisced about his early days in Chennai and how meeting many Communist comrades shaped his thinking. He mentioned director Vetrimaaran as someone who strongly represents leftist ideologies in the Tamil film industry.

Referring to the novel “Thariyudan”, which was adapted into the movie “Sangathalaivan” by one of Vetrimaaran’s assistant directors and produced by Vetrimaaran, Samuthirakani appreciated how it highlighted the lives and struggles of textile workers. He credited films like “Visaranai” and “Vada Chennai” for elevating his political consciousness.

He further spoke about the impact of reading the novel “Kaaval Kottam” and meeting its author, which deepened his awareness on social issues. He expressed joy in working among directors who embrace red or Communist ideologies. He even called ancient Tamil saint Thirumoolar the “first Communist” for preaching equality — “One clan, one God”.

Samuthirakani asserted that Communism is about ensuring equality and fighting class discrimination. Wearing a red shirt often motivates him to speak boldly, as red symbolizes justice and unity. He concluded by saying he believes in unity and reforms rather than distinguishing between right and left ideologies. “Let’s stand together and bring positive change,” he encouraged.
