Veteran director R. Sundarajan is known as the Silver Jubilee director because most of his films including his debut ‘Payanangal Mudivathillai’ starring Mohan ran for more than 200 days (in fact his debut film ran for 574 days). He has helmed films with all the top stars of the era including Rajinikanth, Vijayakanth, Sathyaraj, Prabhu, Karthick and later on Vijay.
The one dream that Sundarajan had was to direct Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan and he wrote a special script for the legendary actor in which he has triple roles that of an effiminate dancer and his two sons. However for some reason Kamal did not accept the film and after many years K.S. Ravikumar requested Sundarajan to give him the script and that film ‘Varalaaru’ became the most critically acclaimed and commercial success in Thala Ajith’s career. Do watch the video here for more details about ‘Varalaaru’ and the veteran director’s path to success.
