The severed AIADMK factions of OPS and Sasikala had a falling-out for the 'Two leaves' symbol for the RK Nagar elections that are at sight.
The Election Commission on Thursday, however, froze the symbol and barred the parties from using the AIADMK name and the 'two leaves' symbol in the upcoming bypolls. Both factions had to choose temporary symbols and names to contest the elections. The OPS camp chose 'AIADMK Puratchi Thalaivi Amma' as the party's name and opted for an 'Electricity pole' symbol, perhaps because of its the closest resemblance to the 'Two leaves'.
Sasikala's coterie (officially headed by Palaniswami) will contest the elections as 'AIADMK Amma' and chose the symbol of a 'Hat'. But, why hat? Why not an 'Auto rickshaw', or a 'bat' that were considered too by the party? Senior politician and Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha, M Thambidurai has given an explanation. "The symbol is typical of its founder, MG Ramachandran. MGR is known to wear similar hats, so the symbol of 'Hat' makes perfect sense for the party" says Thambidurai.
While affirming that the symbols were only temporary, he expressed confidence that the party's candidate, TTV Dinakaran would win the elections with a thumping majority. Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar constituency will have its by-elections on April 12, with 2.64 eligible voters.
